The new expansion, The Taken King, was a nice facelift, much better experience now. They also put in a way to get you to higher light using an item. Still has grinding like everything else but there are lots to do, quests and all besides the raid.
Raids have always been like that but Destiny LFG.net gets you in to teams easily.
