Mark, for anything moving, I almost always have the MKIV set to Continuous (the "c" on the front dial) and focus area set to "wide" using the fn button on the back. The AF algorithm is scarily good at figuring out what I am trying to focus on 95% of the time. For the other 5% I switch to Lock-on Expand Flexible Spot. It nailed Smokey pretty good here from clear across my back yard:
