There were odds early of one flight in nine ending in disaster.
I am very pro science and discovery, etc. But there is really no reason anymore of sending people in space. 'bots can do it better and a Challenger full of 'bots is no problem.
Going to the moon was great for the U.S. and it helped technology, but not a lot. We could have probably had a mechanized lunar landing before 1969 at a fraction of the cost. The bulk of the cost was in cutting risk.
