Intriguing article - thank you. I didn't know of the BMW influence on the industry.
I always figured it was because the R is like a regular manual transmission in the BMW's - ie, forward.
Plus pushing back on the column is a more natural motion to go into forward drive - and accordingly, pushing the column forward is more difficult to accidentally engage - so you can't go into reverse accidentally.
I do dislike the 'nub' like that on the Prius.
