I submit that the Jaguar DOHC 6 (3.4-4.2L) was as smooth. That engine in the XJ6 was silky smooth. BMWs of course just as smooth.
I too would lament the disappearance of the 6. Inline 4 engines are not as balanced. Unless some magical balancing act has been discovered.
My 2.3 L 4 cyl E30 M3 was a buzz bomb. I prayed for the BMW in line 6. Prayers were answered in the 3.0 L DOHC 6 cyl, E36 M3. Smooth as a babies button.
