Thanks to both of you. I haven't really given it any serious effort yet, shooting bracketed shots and combining, but I tried a few HDRs of different "exposure" processing of the same raw image (once each for highlights, midtones, and shadows), saved into three different TIFFs and combined using the HDR feature of CS4, and it just looked miserable. I need to read more tutorials about how to get the look I've seen from some of the HDR stuff posted online.

CS4 is relatively new to me. I came from CS, and prior to that v6 and v4 before that. So I skip versions and upgrade infrequently. Every time I do, it takes me a while to get used to the new interface and new features.
