The original Conception of a four door was abandoned due to its close proximity to the standard 3er F30. Plus it's direct competitor the A5 Sportback was also a Hatch.

Was abandoned due to being expensive to produce... lets be honest. Also the hatch crowd is one bmw wanted to capture
