That's the thing. The only way to open the trunk from the trunk release on it is to either unlock all doors OR if you had Comfort Access, as it would detect whether you had the key on you at the rear of the vehicle.
Though I vaguely remember on the NBT systems you can choose the function of the Trunk Unlock in the Door Lock/Lighting Settings.
