I'd say it tends to fall back on a tried and true cliche - seems to happen when you are trying the least and/or least expecting it - when you are not trying to process that bizarre formula for a mate you dreamed up in your head and get to the realization that certain personal traits trump everything and then it all makes sense - not really a compromise just a realization of what is really important in a soulmate. Wow! OK, enough of my psycho-babble
