Typically for me it's the lenses that are the bulk of the weight. My SLR body is bigger than mirrorless, but I've always felt that it wouldn't be much of a noticeable difference once you have a decent lens attached.

I still travel with a 6D and contemplated for a long time about moving to Sony, but the price was tough to beat on the 6D for a travel SLR.
As a Canon user for many, many years, I love my 5D3 and backup 50D together with a bagful of lenses. But I never take them on my travels !
For years I used a Canon G11, then a G12 and most recently a Canon G1X as my 'travel' camera.

This year I moved up to a Fuji X-T1 as my travel camera. Together with the 18-55 kit lens, I take Fuji 10 - 24 and 55 - 200 lenses when I go away.
This covers everything I need at a fraction of the bulk and weight of my big Canons.
IQ from the Fuji is absolutely first class.
