I think that's true of most people. Lenses are key. Canon generally reserves it's very best lenses for full-frame (they all work on crop-sensors), but there are some really good EF-S and STM lenses that can give an L-series a run for the money.
I'd kill for an EF-S 600mm f/4 that had L-series IQ. It's doable, but the market would be relatively small, I think. The size and weight savings over an EF would be HUGE.
