I went from Rebel XT, to 50D, to 5D Mk II to 5D Mk III. I cannot imagine what else I could possibly need that the 5D Mk III does not already offer. I don't do any bird photography, or any sports photography for that matter. But for general "a day in the life of" photography, the 5D Mk III works perfectly well. And I'm a novice at best!
