Degrees doesn't matter as much as you think. I saw one (albeit faint) from the outskirts of Madison once. They're commonly seem from Minnesota and South Dakota too on stronger days.

I've only see it once and that was out the window of a winter night flight to Germany. If you ever fly to Europe in the winter, try to sit on the left side of the plane so your window faces north.
