Today I completed the battery replacement and new o-ring seal in my 39-year-old Seiko Speed Master motorcycle watch designed by Guigiaro (BMW M1) and worn by Ayrton Senna until Rolex made him a better offer. I've owned this watch since new but sidelined it in 1993 when I got my first Victorinox Officer watch. Seiko made a run of 3,000 of these as a reissue around 2016, but this is the original. Today I used every watch tool I could find or buy to replace the battery (tiniest screws I've ever seen), and the waterproof seal. To my amazement it fired up perfectly and I was even able to remember (or re-learn) how to set it. Even the light inside still works. I could not be happier to have this memory from my youth functioning again. To top it off, the original Swiss Army (Victorinox) officers watch is still working, too. The Guigiaro design was "tilted" to make it easier to read for a motorcyclist without removing hands from the bars. So I drove to work today in my 37-year-old BMW, wearing my 29-year-old Swiss Army watch and when I arrived home my Amazon order for batteries and tiny screwdriver had arrived (I'd received the set of 950 watch o-rings and silicone lube jar previously to re-seal the Swiss Army) and I was able to resurrect this old friend:
