When Honda moved the Honda Accord up in size it moved the Civic up to replace it and brought the Fit below the Civic.
Because Honda realized that Those buyers of small sedans aren't going to completely disappear..

BMW moved the 5 and the 3 up in size and left a coupe and no sedan in the spot for the E82 1 series and now F22/F87 2.
They actually DO have 3 and 5 door vehicles (ala the Honda Fit) and those sell like hotcakes all over Europe because..Those buyers of small sedans didn't disappear..

They are now 2 generations late to the party and what has happened is other manufacturers have taken the sales in the spot that BMW abandoned.
BMW is now trying to rally back and indeed going the cheap route. We shall see how they fare in this category... but the fact that they are now building another vehicle in this category highlights the truth that ..Those buyers of small sedans didn't disappear..

BMW hoped that everyone that wanted a small vehicle would buy an X1.... and of course they will trot out the X2 as well... but we shall see if they can recapture buyers in the small luxury sedan market that they DOMINATED for decades.

Here are the current sales for 2 Series (coupe only - natch) - http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1462562

2 series sales don't even break out of triple digits each month.... because there is no sedan. BMW IS A SEDAN COMPANY.

they cut their teeth on the 3 SERIES, 5 SERIES, 7 SERIES. And yes.. while there were 3 series coupes and 6 series coupes.. Every BMW SEDAN model sells better than it's two door counterpart.
