I live deep in the Welsh countryside and us and our farmer neighbours all share shooting rights over each others land and on any given day you are highly likely to find at least one person wandering around with shotguns and .22LR rifles. It's a highly effective neighbourhood watch scheme.

However for those of a less rural location I would suggest a hatchet or small handaxe, £20 from B+Q. Bloody effective CQ weapon, especially indoors.
