After research, he made the decision to try this just seconds before hand in a last ditch attempt to get to 4th place to compete for the championship. No mechanical failure leading up to it.
They were claiming mechanical failure in the immediate aftermath but I suppose since no serious penalties came from it the truth came out. First "things turned blurry." Then it became the whole "I did this on GameCube" explanation lol
