This article from Detailed Designs Auto Spa in Georgia, I feel addresses all of these in a concise and with a visual that will explain a great deal.
I spoke with the owner and was informed that the diagram in this piece is as close to actual scale as can be rendered, so it will give you a very accurate depiction of what is actually going on with your paint.
