There are various forms of "staggered", generally speaking square vs staggered will be referred as:

Square

- Same width all around ( F and R )
- Ability to rotate tires in traditional manner
- Front wheel/tire setup may sit more "flush" in comparison to the rear

Staggered

- With BMWs, most examples will include smaller width FRONT and larger width REAR
- Ability to run larger rear tire. Provides aggressive/wide/flush look (subjective)

^ Each will also have their own pros/cons in terms of handling/performance
