Uh...the ///M stands for Motorsport. So, the M3/M4 is already BMW's answer to the GT3.
I suppose you could say a M4 CSL = GT3RS
The reality of course, is that the M cars are a very successful compromise by design. Too much luxury, tech (aka weight) to be considered true track contenders.
I do wish the M division would promote the M2 as a stripped, light weight & trackable street car...sub 3000lbs

The M3/4 is no where near a competitor to the GT3.
It's a very capable competitor/alternative to a base Carrera or maybe an S at best. A variant between an M3/4 and GTS would be very popular.
