The "M" division of BMW is the performance division, so the the question (when seeing an M badge added by BMW themselves) is always; did the M badge accompany performance enhancements. And if you can say yes to that, then they didn't just slap a badge on something, they enhanced the performance.
I'm not a BMW fanboi, so I can't speak for all models, but the 2020 M340i DCT I drove as a loaner would best my M2 on the highway, so IMO it's worthy of an M badge.
