I turo'd a base spec Macan and experienced all the same things in your first paragraph , but none of the second. It had a boat anchor engine but the chassis and suspension were on point and it happily ate corners and did things it ought not do with it's huge sidewall tires.
In short: I had fun with a base macan. I just drove a base x2 yesterday and wanted to kill myself.
