I kinda have one of those stories too. In 2013 I had a boss from a prior job call me and ask if I wanted to come join an IT start-up she just started working for. At the time the company was sub-100 people. I decided to take the risk even though I'd been burned once before by going to a small company only to be laid off less than a year later when business slowed.
For the next 4 years I collected stock options, then the company IPO'd. The next 4 years I got annual RSU grants as the company rocketed to 10x valuation and my holdings grew to a few million (pre-tax of course
)
I will forever be grateful that my old boss reached out and that I decided to take that chance!
