I think if it was a big deal, BMW would've set a rev limiter that the dealer would need to remove after 1200 miles. They already don't give launch control until your 1200 mile service, so why not do a rev limiter too?
Anyway, my point is try to be easy on the car, but don't worry if you go over 5500 by accident. If it was such a big deal, BMW would've put a rev limiter on the car until break in was over.
