Le Zebra was a great hotel and had fantastic food. Ahau is another good lodging/food option (though no pool like Zebra). There's lots of good food options on the main drag, all within walking distance of those two hotels.

Skip renting a Jeep unless you're going to to the nature reserve south of main "beach area" Tulum or a self-guided Cenote. Taxis are everywhere and plentiful and cheap once in Tulum, but reserve a private shuttle van from Cancun airport then as there are lots of not-nice areas between Cancun and the "resort area" of Tulum, which IS already overrun with shoeless hipsters and potheads!

The beaches, food, reserves, snorkeling and dancing make it at least a go-to once!
