This fall he bought a 12megapixel point and shoot to replace it. took make 50 shots with it and handed it to his wife and picked his old camera back up again just because he liked the shots better.
I don't blame him. sadly there isn't much control on it, there is an Automatic mode, a Program mode, and some simple video capture. But the manual mode is only ISO adjustment (minimal at best) and a slight bit of + or - EV
very simple. but effective i guess.
I was thinking about picking him up a used 6megapixel Nikon DSLR i saw a few weeks back, but i'm not sure he'd appreciate it.

Hell yeah. My old 2001-ish A80 @ ISO800 takes pictures better than my 2006-ish S3 IS does @ ISO400. The latter camera sucks in the low light/dark. If it wasn't for the optical zoom, I'd chuck it.
