I had that experience in venice a few years back. The best pizza we got, was at a local place next to the hotel we stayed in, where locals came taking their dog with them and greeting the chefs like they were familiy.
Inside Venice it was bad and overprized food.

I was in Venice a few years ago and went to Murano to look for some blown glass for the house. After finding a nice piece I asked the salesman where a good place for lunch was. He immediately started to point just down the walk to the very touristy eateries. I listened politely and then asked him where he took his SO for lunch. He then told me about this great little spot on the next island over, Burano, called Gatto Nero. He was right, it was wonderful and away from the crowds. And yes dogs were welcome. This fellow's name is Arturo. I'd estimate he weighs about 60kgs (130lbs).
