GMB brand water pump

Hi all,

I'm actually over on E90post but I just had to post here, hopefully this will help someone...

Went over to my friend's shop today hoping to schmooze some lift time to work on my Jeep but instead got roped into working on a customer car instead. '98 (I think) 528i, needed a water pump. Long story short, this water pump was *SO* screwed that the shaft was cocked, and it made horrific crunchy metallic noises when turning it by hand, the mechanic that was working on it was getting frustrated trying to get it apart and needed a relief.

So I step in, he was stuck trying to take the fan clutch off. I guess it got so hot that the fan clutch didn't want to unscrew and he was running out of ideas. I suggested just taking the WP, pulley, and fan off as a unit and working on it on the bench. I finally get it out after busting off the impeller for clearance and ended up having to grind the metal bit of the impeller off of the shaft and then ground flats in the shaft and put it in a large bench vice and using a full sized 32mm wrench with my whole strength to get it off. I literally wasn't sure whether when I broke it free whether it actually came loose or if my 32mm wrench had shattered, that's how welded together they were, presumably from the bearings making the shaft red hot. (yeah, the owner drove it while it was making this horrible racket.)

So then I look at this water pump and notice that it still has an inked on date code... OF 5/24/2010!!!

I am APPALLED that anyone could sell a water pump that could fail so catastrophically after less than three years FROM MANUFACTURE!

I don't know if this is an isolated incident or not, but I can tell you that I'm going to remember the brand "GMB" and none of their products are going on any of my cars, ever.

I just hope that that poor car doesn't have head gasket issues as a result of this abuse...
