Best 1st Car For Teen

So my daughter is going to be getting her learner's permit soon and so I need to start shopping for a car for her. I told her whatever we get it will be used.

She really likes the compact SUV style vehicles, e.g., CX-5, Tiguan. However, I'm not sure what's the safest, most appropriate vehicle, up to the $20k or so price range.

Thoughts?

$20k!?!

The car will be totaled in <2 years.

I'd spend about $2k on a 5-speed Civic.

OP, Mercedes Benz G63 AMG 6x6 is the only way to go here.

we got our girls an e46xit. It's been a really good first car for them. Responsive enough to not be a camry, but in no way overly powered to the point of being dangerous *anything can be dangerous, but it doesn't sneak up on you*.

Its a great 3rd car because my wife and I don't mind driving it when our cars are in the shop. Perfect beater.

+1

Get something that will be safe (brake fast for what it is, handle decent and not throw you off the road if you give it some input etc.) and still be a basic A to B car for atleast a year or two. 20K is a lot of money IMO for a first car especially since shes a women driver. Women on average have MORE accidents than men however, men tend to have worse/higher speed accidents making their insurance higher due to more intense crashes.

With that being said, like others have posted, 5-10 year old Civic, Corolla, Camry would do great.

Personally, I wouldn't let my child have a SUV as first car. Go for a used Prius and keep it under $10k

Ahh very true. That totally slipped my mind.

How about a Pontiac Aztec? That thing is universally hated by everybody.

Just think how safe she would be with federal agents watching her 24/7!

Acccording to Top Gear, the perfect first car seems to be a Volvo stationwagon (estate). Safe, decent fuel economy, something she won't want to be seen in really late at night, and cheap to insure. Perfect
