Anything is possible, if you're willing to spend the cash. I'd ballpark a swap like that at between $15,000 and $20,000. You're talking about custom engine mounts to get it in, the price of the engine itself, and a lot of wiring harness and DME work as the E39 is about a generation behind the cars using the N54. You'd probably be able to use E39 parts-bin upgrades for the suspension and brakes to handle the extra power, and the stock trans might be okay since the 540i was putting down similar numbers.

At the end of all that, you'd have an old BMW with $20k in parts and mods, worth about $10k. On the plus side, some mechanic's kid wouldn't have to worry about college.

Or get a 540. I'm sure you can trade in your 525 for a 540 at way less cost then an engine swap. A 540 may not be as fast, but it will be a huge power upgrade over what you are driving now.

buying a used m5 or 540 would be cheaper.

There's a ton of E39 M5s on eBay right now going for less than 25K if you're interested.

Umm, it would cost $20k to swap in the twin turbo engine. There's NO WAY it cost more than that to ship a car to Israel. I've had friends fly their cars to Australia from here for under $5k.

You could buy and ship an E39 M5 from here for $30k. Just don't send a cashier's check for more than the amount and ask someone to forward the remainder to your bank in Africa, please.

yea i know that it would be cheaper to ship an m5....but the point is not the cost of shipment...the problem is the taxes....we can only import cars that are not more than 2 years on the road...and the taxes are 114-140% of car price.

Hey if you already own the 525, and are planning on an engine replacement, go for the 4.4l V8
