FK8 Type R LE or 2023 Golf R?

If given the choice between these two, which would you guys choose? The LE only 4k miles on it and is already fully PPF'd and the Golf R is brand new. The LE comes in slightly cheaper, but it's pretty much a wash in that regard. Only 600 of them made which is nice as well.

For some additional context, I already have an M4 Xdrive, so looking for a fun, four door 6MT to add to the stable and I've narrowed it to these two.

The FK8 looks terrible in my opinion, so based on that alone I would go Golf R. If you were talking FL5, that would be a different story.

From racing AutoX, the Civic R is the real deal and amazingly fast for the front wheels being the drive wheels. Would seriously consider. Might come down to interior space. The AWD of the R would be better for starting in snow/ice (read, starting, not turning or braking), but it would be a hard decision for me. Lots of people are going to dismiss the Civic R for being FWD, but pay attention to the reviews and track times. The people dismissing are the ones that haven't driven. The latest generation takes a little away from the driving experience of the FK8, but not by much.

I agree with you 100%. I've never owned a Honda but they knocked it out of the park with the FL5. I'd strongly consider trading my truck in for one if I could find one at MSRP.

FK8 LE all day if it isn't going to be a DD. Those things will be extremely sought after in the future.

Because 1990s Japanese sports cars were the best cars ever made. Not some of the best…the best.

I’ll take an Mk 8 Golf R. One of the better looking Golf R’s since the inception of the Mk 4 R32. But I am certainly biased since I have owned an Mk4, Mk6, and Mk 7.5.

This! Hard pass on the FK8 for too many reasons. The FL5 on the other hand is an instant winner. Absolutely looking to add one to the stable.

And this! OP, I would stand fast and desperately seek out a FL5. Instant classic IMHO.

Type R LE. Future collectors item and unlike the VW, it will actually last forever.

People talk more about how poor the interior is on the Gold, rear window switches, infotainment system, adjusting the temperature at night etc.

Look up that stuff first.

If its the same as the touch climate system in the tiquan I rented a few months back....it's really, really bad. Definitely enough to make me pass on the SUV (despite really really good mileage).

The Tiguan has capacitive touch hvac controls which to me are worse than what's on the Golf. The Golf just has a climate button and then it's all controlled through the infotainment screen. Rather have buttons, but every company is going this stupid way.

Golf R all day... as much praise as the Type R gets, its still FWD.... no matter what anyone tells you, this removes a lot of the fun you could have at lower speeds, launching etc.

I’ve only had my R for a month, but it all works great. Coming from a Mk7, it’s a faster system and can be customized. I’ve got stability control in the quick menu, so it’s actually faster to disengage than it was with physical buttons on the Mk7. The iD4 has the stupid rear window buttons, so far I don’t think any other VW group cars do, certainly not the Mk8.

The Mk8 is putting down around 430/430 with just a Stage 1 tune, and a bit more with a downpipe. I haven’t paid attention to E85 tunes yet, but they should be a good bit higher. You’d benefit from a better intercooler with either transmission and a stronger clutch in the manual.

On a super low mileage car, yes. Anything else, it's probably a detriment.

It does not. Carvana or CarMax won't give you more for your car because ppf is applied. Those folks processing cars for buy offers probably don't even know what ppf is. There are special circumstances where a buyer is choosing between a car with ppf and one without and may be more inclined to buy the car with ppf instead of the one without. Ppf is largely a sunk cost and you should know and accept that going in.
