How do u haggle a deal with dealer?

I've been contemplating to get a new car. I realized I never had or used any tactics when haggling car prices from a dealer.
I read somewhere that finding a fleet manager or online sales manager of the car dealer would save you a ton.

Wanna share some of your haggling tactics?

I have learned through the years the best haggling you can do is walk away.

Yeah, online or text is ideal. Pick a price you're willing to pay, offer it, then practice saying no to any counters. They'll get hungry...

^This, learn to say no and be prepared to walk if they don’t come to a deal you are comfortable with.

I’d add have realistic number in mind informed by detailed research on the exact car and options you want. They aren’t going to give in to a ridiculously low offer and they need to keep the lights on as well.

I found that TrueCar gives a good starting point for pricing.

I usually call a few dealers, and play them against one another to achieve the best price.

Go to Edmunds, choose your car and let the site email all the dealers in your area telling them that you are shopping for a new specific car. They all will know that Edmunds sent emails to at least 4 or 5 dealers, so they already know they are in for a fierce competition. Last time I did this (M3), two dealers were pretty much offering the same deal, it was more like a question of which one to go to. One of the dealers emailed me asking how close we were to finish the deal and I told him I was waiting on dealer X to get back to me on delivery charges. Guy replied to me "don't even bother waiting for the answer, I have just knocked the delivery charges". It saved me good money on my 335i and M3.

Some tips I learned in the auto industry:
buy at the end of the month - they will be dying to make a sale
do not talk about the trade until AFTER you have settled on the price of the new car - that way they can't move numbers and try to hide how much you are paying
reject the first, second, and possibly even third offer - they will work to make the sale
do not buy anything from the finance guy - oil change plans and paint protection plans cost more than they save you. the only exception to this rule is GAP if your insurance doesn't cover it.
be prepared to walk away - strongest tactic ever
my favorite trick is to pit two or more dealers against each other from my laptop at home. I pick out a car, email the sales department from 3 dealers, wait for reply. Then I forward the best price to the other two and say "beat this" and they match or beat the other guy. I do this for 5 or 6 rounds until I end up at absolute rock bottom
EVERYTHING is negotiable - even the interest rate if your credit is good enough. dealers make money to "hold points" and charge you higher than you qualified for APR. They get a range from the bank, 0-2.99% and they get paid more if you sign for 2.99%.
Thats all I can think of right now but its easy to get a steal if you know how to do it.

When I traded mine in for my ride currently, I simply told them honestly what I knew my trade in was worth (priced under what they'd resell it for) and what I'd pay for my ride and told them they can either have my money or not. I truly did not care as my trade in car was already fully paid.

They came back and forth and I stood firm and in about 15 minutes of the old I-gotta-ask-my-manager routine, I drove off with a BMW. Doesn't always go that way so you need to decide how badly you want that specific car or not, but know that BMW's are not rare and there'll always be another one available on another lot or private sale.

My rules are dealers will not take you seriously unless you come in.

Like they said talk is cheap if youre really interested youre going to come in and test drive the car a text email offer doesnt get taken seriously unless youre pre approved is just good enough for them to follow up.

If youre REALLY interested in the car fill up the application shows them youre qualify to buy and they want u even more now.

What ever theyre asking ask for the “out the door price” (car price ,tags, taxes, delivery) and negotiate from that Price. DONT negotiate their asking price makes thing confusing when they add their dealer fee, etc etc.

Have realistic expectations a dealership will not lose money just to make you happy specially if they car just got listed.

Be ready to walk alway every 30 days the dealerships do a price analysis and they’ll call you. They might call you before the 30 days depending how long the car has been sitting in the lot but it might sell to someone else again have realistic expectations.

The goal is to make them very little profit also check by state dealerships sometimes make money of your interest rate. Again do research know whats a good deal and what isnt.

Also do not buy anything from the finance guy except aftermarket warranty which is most of the time negotiable if not get your own

Like others said:

(1) Do your research up front and offer a reasonable price
(2) Be prepared to walk away, they will usually not let you do that if you are close on numbers and they will agree to what you want if you show you are willing to leave. The power of this cannot be overstated in any negotiation.

Wow. Some nice advices here. Thanks guys.

On a side note, I've looked at so called invoice price online. Is this realistic price to pursue? Or can be lower?

Don't tell them, but have financing options from your own banking institutions in your back pocket. Usually if they can offer cash vs. interest rates, and you already know your credit union can give you a cheaper rate, take the cash.

Oh, and walk away if you don't like what they offer. They won't let you off the lot.

But the best option is to actually, truly know someone on the lot you are looking at. I walked in, saw an old neighborhood friend from way back, and didn't even need to haggle the price. But I was STILL ready to walk away.

Some long time ago... i tried to trade in a car that I knew on the street was worth 13k... I would gladly accept 10k from the dealer for it... The dealer offered me 7.5k (less than an outright cash price from carmax lol). The car they wanted to sell me was priced 55k... however, I knew online, I could buy it for 51k and that was what I offered... as you can see that deal didn't go anywhere. Dealers look for idiots is what it comes down to, the absolute strongest tactic is never to get emotional and walk away immediately if you dont like anything.

Don't be in a rush to buy the car. Give yourself enough time to shop. Takes my normally 3-4 months before I decide to pull the trigger. Shop around regionally.

I buy equipment (large equipment), the best thing you can do is go through all of the specification process, get to the final build of your vehicle, then look them straight in the eye and tell them they have one shot to gice you a price. Then tell them you are going to two othher dealers and doing the same thing and whoever is lower gets the sale, no haggling, no shopping numbers. That will get you the best price.

Can all or any of the above be applied to purchases that need to be ordered via an allocation that is limited (as opposed to something they already have on the lot)?

Everyone is going to have their own way of negotiating a deal.

My advice is to do a thorough research of what the car is currently selling for through various online resources (TrueCar, Edmunds, Autotrader, Forums). The more you know, the better.

Once you understand what kind of numbers you'll be working with, then it's just matter of finding the right car with the options you're looking for, and reaching out to that dealer directly.

Not all dealers or salesperson are willing to negotiate, so knowing when to move on (walk away) is essential. It's usually easier to work with the Internet Sales Manager directly, because most of them earn more on units sold versus sales markup.

If your talking about really really specific no. If it's just a few options here or there they might be able to trade another dealer for the car you want.

Only advice I can remotely provide is to look for dealerships that focus on volume moved. From the little experience I’ve had, volume dealerships are way more likely to make better deals.

I was looking to lease a daily Infiniti QX30 last year. Went to 6 total dealerships. Most wanted $2k-$4k down to get payments around $350. Went to another dealer quite far away and they easily offered zero down and $295 a month for similarly equipped cars under the same mileage and terms.

1. Wait until the last 3 days of the month and pick 3-5 dealerships.

2. Email them the same spec on the car you want, copying them all in the email, telling that you're a cash buyer and want the car tomorrow and will purchase the best deal at that point.
3. Make certain your cell phone is charged to catch all of the phone calls.

I did this on my M6 and saved nearly $10K.

Cheers-mk
