FWD for the next 1-series? (Italian website, not sure of legitimacy)

My Italian cousin posted this on FB, not sure of the source or the legitimacy but thought I'd post it up here. He's worked at BMW for many years, but yea, just putting this up here...

Yup. Lazy engineering.

Instead of designing a good rwd powertrain to handle power and torque, they are just giving up and going AWD, or plain FWD on econobox models. Bet it's coming to base level engine 2-5 series cars soon too tbh.

This isn’t just old news, it’s bordering on ancient news. We first got word of the next 1 Series moving to the FWD UKL platform from SCOTT back in 2012:

And of course the next generation 1 Series due in 2017 will resort to being FWD.
Sure, it won’t actually arrive until 2019 rather than 2017 as he said back then, and a number of other things in that post changed over the years. But nevertheless, we’ve known for the better part of the current “F” generation of BMW products that the next 1 Series could very well go FWD.

More recently, spy shots of FWD 1 Series have been posted here a number of times, such as:

So, OP, you are just a little bit behind on your BMW news. No matter though, posting new articles on the topic is still fair game.

There is also a 1 series on sale today in China that is FWD. In the US you can also get a FWD X1. I had it as a loaner. I wish that on no one.

Best friend just had one as a loaner while his X5 was down, said it was one of the biggest hunks of junk he'd ever driven.
