Mercedes-AMG 53 series and M256 straight six engine

https://www.google.ca/amp/www.nydail...icle-1.3761902

Looks like mercedes is dumping their V6 for their very own straight six.

429HP, 384 ft lbs torque with the battery giving an overboost option for 450HP (+21HP) and a whooping 568 FT lbs torque ( +184TQ)

Christ.

9 speed transmission is the standard.

What do you guys think of this?

It warrants a test drive for me

Oh, did I mention? They actually look pretty decent too.

I’ve been awaiting the arrival of this engine for years now. It has the potential to really motivate the competition, especially BMW of course.

The high output version of the engine actually debuted in the new S500 last year, but they are not selling this model in the US for some reason. They also debuted it in lower specification in the S450 for ROW, but gave the US a legacy-V6 powered S450 instead. They did introduce this lower specification version to the US in the new generation CLS450 late last year at the LA auto show, however.

Things get particularly interesting if - and really this is when, not if - this engine comes to the next generation W206 C Class (and sister GLC). Because the C63/GLC63 use the M177 V8 in a lower specification than the rest of the Mercedes-AMG *63 lineup, there may be the opportunity to move to the M256 for the range topping AMG C Class and GLC models. That supposes that Mercedes could push the engine to at least 500hp on a timeline consistent with when these models are due.

If, on the other hand, they do not do that then BMW, Audi, and company better lookout. Because it would presumably mean a new C53 with the top spec 4XXhp+ M256 going up against the G20 M340i, B9 S4, and others with considerably less power. Then, to create space, we’d be looking at a C63 with presumably no less than 530hp from the M177 to start and very likely somewhat more in “S” trim. Needless to say, I’m intrigued by how this is going to play out.

At any rate, the M256 is the real deal and the 48V system with ISG and all electric accessories for a “beltless” design is clearly the next big evolution of the internal combustion engine.
