Question re: 1998 528i suspension

Hi all,

Two questions for you:

1) My '98 528i has about 120K miles, and I'd like to replace its shocks and springs. I'd like to install the shocks and springs from the sport model. Can someone help me with the part numbers for these shocks and springs?

2) I've noticed that during hard braking (at 60 MPH+), the steering wheel shudders noticeably. I'd appreciate any thoughts on what could be causing this, so I can provide some direction to the service shop.

Thanks!

TA

Okay, I'll jump in here (this particular subforum seems quiet.

1. Check out Real OEM. You will just need part numbers for "Sport Suspension" instead of "Standard Suspension". If you use your serial you should be able to see these since Sport Pack became optional in MY98.

2. Do you DIY? I ask since it should like you need some front end bushings. There are a few that go bad but the control arms are among the most common. If you have a good Indy shop they should be able to diagnose if you cannot. Most likely it is not warped rotors unless you have cheap aftermarket rotors on the car. Mileage wise, you would be about due for some bushings.

Garage List
About your brake-ish juddering, it could be (I don't know the suspension tuning on your cars), as W.S. said the control arm bushings up front, but they usually are also felt just cruising. It could also be a loose caliper mounting bolt/pin that's allowing too much motion, or possibly some pad material stuck on the rotors.
