DSC info?

So I just bought a ‘01 540i m sport, and I am wondering how to turn on/off the dsc? I know there is a button on the center console, but I’ve heard things about holding the button down to turn it completely off. Also, is it off when the light on the dash is illuminated or when it’s dark? Thanks.

You can turn it off by pressing the button on the center stack. Doing so will illuminate the stability control light on the dash. The system will reset when you restart the car. There is no way to permanently defeat the system and you don't want to. DSC incorporates both stability and traction control. Since the car does not have a limited slip differential, the system can apply some braking to the wheel that slips/spins helping gain traction when it is wet or slipperly out. Very useful on wet and slippery hills in Seattle. I am in Magnolia and also drive downtown a bunch and when my ABS module failed, it took out the DSC and it was not fun for the couple weeks while I waited for a replacement.

The light on the dash illuminates when the system is off, or there is a system fault.

Find the owners manual and give it a read, there are a lot of neat features to the car and the HVAC system. Worth reading up.
