https://www.macrumors.com/2018/06/20...gital-car-key/

Wonder how long before this becomes available on BMW?

As soon as this is released, the hackers will figure out a way to break in and do all manner of malfeasant things. Hopefully, this will only be installed in new cars in a year or two and our current vehicles won't be affected.

The hackers haven't got into my iPhone (which holds all my debit/credit cards for Apple Pay) so I really think that's an alarmist position to take. I'll be trying to get it the minute it's available.

We should do away with wallet and keys and just have our phones and watches. Is this going to work with Apple Watch?

I'd like to think it would work with the Watch, given that Apple Pay does I can't see why not.

This won't be locked to Apple, should be an industry-wide standard.

The Tesla model 3 doesn't come with a traditional key so it's unlocked with a phone app. If the phone is dead, Tesla gives you a credit card-sized key that can also be used to unlock the car. I'm sure this new digital key standard will have something similar.

Release 1.0 should be available for activation (though the Connected Drive Online Customer Portal) on all current models with ID6 within the next few weeks at most. Initially only Samsung S7 and newer phones are compatible and existing prerequisite equipment is Wireless Charging (NFC receivers on the vehicle are not present without).

Release 2.0 adds additional features, and will permit use with Apple, Panasonic, Samsung, and LG Compatible devices.

Wow...how insightful! After spending 10+ years in the cybersecurity business, I can say with confidence that putting your life on your phone isn't very smart.

More secure than having it on a phone that's connected to the internet.

I don't mind the idea of this, but honestly I'd rather a super slim key the size of a credit card that fits in my wallet. Even better, a tag that fits in my phone case like the one my bank issues for attaching to your phone (they don't support Apple Pay).

It's great because it fits in between my iPhone X and the Apple leather case, and can easily be moved to another case, and I can assign it to any of my credit or debit cards on my account from the app.

Lexus did a pretty good job with it already

Considering phone does not know car location and other method you need to be in car proximity, I disagree.
