Water pump replacement question.
I am replacing my water pump and the repair manual says to use a water based lubricant on the O ring. What can I use as a water based lubricant?
Thanks |

I found myself with the same dilemma. This might sound crazy, but it worked for me... sex lube! Yup, that's right, I figured if it was gentle enough for my junk, it won't hurt the rubber O-rings on my water pump. Worked like a charm.

How many miles are on your car? Is it a V8? I'm wondering how long I have to go before I need one as well (mine is an '03 530 with 67,000 miles).

Mine had 98000 on it. The water pump started leaking from the hole at the front of it as it is designed to do when the bearing starts to fail. If you're not leaking any coolant and the engine is not making any noise it should be okay. Some people might suggest it be changed around 60000 but I would wait. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Besides it might have been replaced already.
Enjoy the car. I do. |

Just replaced the rest of the cooling system at 100,000 after the radiator started leaking. I guess once you fix a leak the next weakest link goes. In my case the radiator so I replaced everything yesterday. Not too hard to do but you have to have some experience working on cars. The hardest thing was getting the new radiator in. I know everyone said to replace everything the first time but I was trying to dodge the bullet.
Next is the transmission fluid and filter change and VANOS system. After going back and forth about doing the tranny fluid I decided to do it. I read that BMW states lifetime as 100,000 miles. Would like to hear back from anyone that did a tranny fluid change on a high mileage transmission. |
