2000 E39 540i - should I buy this car? It has about 80k miles and looks to be in very good shape. It is an auto with the sport package. I have not driven it yet, but the dealer is reputable and I trust that they have taken care of the Major bits. What should I look for and ask about when I drive the car?

I did not buy it. Many others on another board talked me out of it. They said too much money and with no maintenance history. They said it is worth maybe 5-6k. I checked yesterday and it is still for sale.

At least put an offer on the table---whatever you think she is worth.

The e39 is the most beautiful and balanced 5 series and has one of the highest vehicle ratings CR.

80k is a baby on this car.

This is the first production car where the implementation of the dynamic stability control was so good that average drivers became good drivers.

I went to see the car up close one more time. Although it looks nice, up close there's a bunch of mostly minor stuff that would drive me nuts until I fixed all of them. Also, there is a slight oil leak coming from goodness knows where under the front end. I'm done with this one. Now I don't need to worry where I'd keep my 8th vehicle!

Better not to risk the timing chain rail failures and unpreventable egr passage clogging that makes these impossible to pass California smog from model year 2000+. Pre-2000 is smoggable because one "Not Ready" pretest is allowed.
The 6 cyls have reliable rack and pinion steering, and you will be nicely surprised what a tight and economical 3.0 liter with 5 speed can do with fresh or rebuilt Vanos and a stock 540i muffler that bolts right in to the same hangers. Also a West Coast Riots BBTB and removing the screens from the MAF tube.

I went with a 2000 SL500 instead with only 36,000 miles.

Has a new Pioneer stereo system with speakers, amps, etc. including bluetooth, handsfree phone, gps, Sirius/XM. 95,000 miles. $13,999.
