Transmission Type by Year

Hello,

I am experiencing Transmission problems @151k miles and am looking into replacing with a lower mileage transmission or rebuilt that are sold over the internet.

I have a 1997 E39 528i built in 07/97 which has the GM transmission (BMW part# 24001422883 )

A4S 310R
(A=Automatic. 4= 4 gears, S= TopGearOverdrive, 310= Maximum Torque rating in Nm, R= GM)

On the transmission Serial# Plate (green) it shows GM Part# 96 108 236 SC.

My question is......is a transmission which has the same identical GM
Part# 96 108 236 SC off of an E39 1/99 BMW interchangeable with my 1997 528?

Visually, it looks identical from the outside....including the Electronic switch mechanism...

????

Would appreciate some help!

I'll start off by saying I don't know (sorry about that) and go from there. I believe from what you have said that the transmission with the identical part number (from a '99 E39) should work. I don't think there was a motor/tranny change until later on that model year. Just to be sure - you are certain your current transmission is beyond economical repair? The E39 automatics are prone to problems at exactly the mileage you state. Mine started shuddering at some speeds, and some of the shifts became harsher than usual. At the time, I was living in Belgium and I'd hooked up with a very knowledgeable independent repair shop. He confirmed that our E39 automatic transmissions have their quirks, but sometimes you can get lucky and a complete flush and cleaning of valves and related hydraulic components inside might be able to cure the symptoms. I went for the procedure (cost me about 600 Euro, or $850) and it worked. My transmission has been running flawlessly since then, and I've put on an additional 30,000 miles with no problems.

Good luck!

In Europe they use the ZF transmissions vs the GM.

Symptoms are slipping when shifting to 2nd & 3rd gears sometimes not even able to engage sometimes. Seems to work if cold and very gentle....

A rebuild over here in Miami is looking like $1,600.

Sounds like a reasonable price for a re-build. I've heard of prices of $4000 and up for the same in Canada and Europe. My 528i is Canadian Spec (bought in in Toronto), so I don't know if it has the ZF or the GM tranny. No worries. I didn't have the same symptoms as you - mine was shuddering and sometimes shifting too hard, vice missing shifts.
