I think "The Who" is great. They have a lot of great songs. And I understand why they call Entwistle "thunderfingers", he was a great bass player. But I just don't hear virtuosity from Moon or Townsend on their instruments, like I do with Rush or Tool.

Even Townsend said that Moon was only fit to play with The Who, he never had any success outside of them. It was great no doubt but not with others.

Keith Moon was a lead drummer and you have to hear his tracks isolated. Once you do that, your opinion will change. Also, the way he played off of Entwistle is nothing short of extradorniary. Most pros and many of the ones named on this thread have Keith at the top of their list. It has always been Moon and/or Bonzo. There is a reason for that.

Townshend is the inventor of the power chord. He could not play lead in The Who - Entwistle and Moon did.

His use of syncopation is mind blowing. There's a YouTube video of Copeland playing Wrapped Around Your Finger during the reunion tour that is from another world. I figured they would have backup drummers to cover all the different percussion instruments. I am almost positive that he play every beat without help. if you are a drummer, or just appreciate a good drummer, you have to check out the video.

Ok Real Dodger, don't disagree with you a lot but if you listen to Moon when he was on, such as "Live at Leeds, Deluxe", his double bass pounding and the work on the toms really provided the absolute bottom for the band and they were never the same without him. I'd also nominate Mitch Mitchell from the Experience as the playing is always different without a rhythm guitarist-many more fills, so; it requires a bit of overdrumming but both of these guys pull it off. Quite frankly, like Buddy Miles on Band of Gypsies with the steady high hat play! There was a drummer for Rod Stewart who played with Jeff Beck who was also awesome, and then finally, gotta say Ginger Baker who was the epitome of an artist, according to Clapton.

Buddy Miles reminds me a lot of a jazz drummer named Butch Miles. I remember my parents taking me to a Count Basie concern when I was young with him as the drummer. Pretty cool show actually.

I think the drummer you're thinking of is Carmine Appice. Played with Rod Stewart and later with Jeff Beck and Tim Bogert (Beck, Bogart and Appice) but also really well known for his work with Vanilla Fudge and Cactus.

Actually no, but Carmen Appice a great drummer and first heard him on Vanilla Fudge. if you don't mind, I'll get you the drummers name tommorow-he's the one the played the solo on I'm losing you, etc. kenny Jones later did that with the Faces but this guy could pound.

Yeah, has to be Peart. Just has layers and layers of beats and those solos.

But as a honorable mention Stephen Perkins from Janes addiction is actually my favorite drummer.

I'm not sure even when he had two arms he was more than just a good drummer, but his recovery and how he played with one arm was pretty spectacular. And, I've always admired his bandmates for staying with him. I don't think they even toured with a replacement?

Actually, Ringo and excellent drummer for the band's style with rhythm guitar and 2 and 3 part harmonies. Singers don't like lots of fills. He sure sparked a lot of drummers in this country!
