Apple maps is no good; with apple carplay you are forced to use apple maps. we were out of town and wife had to run to a store 1 mile away. With apple maps it took her 10 min to get there. she used google maps on the way back and took her 3 minutes.

Personally when i use map in an area im familiar with i use google maps. If im in an area that i dont know, i use both google maps and waze, with waze running in the background with the alert notification on. That way i have the google maps up on the phone/android auto and then get verbal alerts for police.

This is exactly how I'm running Waze on my iDrive screen. I hardly ever use the factory nav system now.

You can get Waze audio alerts through Spotify, but the Waze map won't show on the display. I tend to use Apple Maps on the screen but Waze running thru Spotify to get the cop alerts and turn by turn.

That seems like a complicated setup to load before driving. I prefer to have no audio so I can listen to music. I use the BMW Navi as I don't have car play and use split screen view so I get turn by turn directions without audio.

Correct, it cannot. There's a very small number of apps that are compatible with Apple CarPlay. Apple does that for a reason; 'Apple Maps' is a direct competitor of Waze so they'll never allow it to integrate into Apple CarPlay.

If you don't use Waze because of the "cartoonish" layout, then the joke is on you.

For me it's actually easier to focus on than the more detailed apple maps/google.

I use Waze religiously but have it running on my phone via a magnet mount (and my iphone case has a slim metal plate in it). Would love the direct Carplay integration.

Has anybody tried iOS 12 beta car play? Would like to know how waze and google maps look on Car Play 12. Post screen shots and video review on YouTube. Seems no one has done it yet.

It's nothing to do with the visual style, it's the multiple terrible UX choices they made. I seriously wonder why Google didnt insist on them overhauling it as part of their billion dollar buyout. Google has made some questionable UX choices itself in the past but it has a massive UX lab with bottomless resources that could fix waze in a single update if it chose to do so

I believe the app developers would need to make changes to supports CarPlay in order for it to work. Installing iOS 12 beta alone at this time is only one piece of the puzzle.

There is jailbroken iOS videos on YouTube running Car Play with Google Maps and You Tube. Pretty much any app, Cydia is the way to go if you want an awesome Car Play experience.

After using waze exclusively in my beater Suzuki SX4 it is clear waze traffic routings is superior to my 2014 iDrive navigation, but it's not as easy to use. When in my F30 I use waze mostly for alerts and iDrive system for navigation mostly.

Apple just said with iOS 12 and next version of carplay it will allow third party navigation and other app support. I would expect it will be available this fall or early next year.
