E34 radio issue

Hi, I recently just bought my first car- an Alpine White 1992 525i. It's great, but the radio does not work. And I don't just mean the AM/FM radio; the tape player is fucked as well. The previous owner drove it on rough roads to work, so I knew the radio would be rattled a bit, but, it's just a must-fix for me. Here is the problem in detail....

When the volume knob is turned and clicks into the 'on' position, there is a semi-loud static cracking sound, which persists until the radio is turned off, no matter what source is selected. Is this the amp that's broken, or will I need an entirely new radio installed?
Is the radio replacement (if necessary) something that I could do at home, or do you guys Recommend I take it to a dealer? Cost estimates please?

THANK YOU SO MUCH TO WHOEVER CAN HELP!!!

The head unit was replaced, and some wiring, and it now works perfectly. I couldn't tell you the exact problem because I had someone else do the work for me. My car is falling apart though, in many ways.
