Bad news

Well, a few years back the car kept overheating, so we changed the thermostat. Fast forward a couple of months, we get new head gaskets. fast forward a year, the car started starting rough, we changed the ignition coil boots, we still need the coils themselves, a month later, (now) we're idling at walgreens, and POP! out coolant tanks blows the f*** up.
is my car a lemon or is this normal for a car with 176,000 miles?

Cooling system problems are well-documented on the 528i. Sorry - it's normal for the E39. Often, it is the plastic expansion tank that goes first. I've had to replace the radiator on mine too, which is another normal problem area. My 528i now has 250K kms, which translates into approx 150K miles. Yours isn't doing to bad if it is just the coolant tank. Also, if your car has an automatic transmission, it has also hopefully had a transmission overhaul in the past, or expect another really expensive fix in the future.

So, if the expansion tank goes, does it mean the radiator is about to? (noobish question)

I don't think one implies the other. Coolant tank failures are common. My impression is that radiator failures happen less often. I've had two coolant tank problems in seven years, and just one radiator problem.

i had my radiator overflow tank crack around 75k milkes, and IIRC they replaced the whole radiator. could go back and check records on it. since then have replaced almost entire coolant system.
