"ECU has been tampered with".

The above is one of the 3 codes set when a 32X is flashed to a 330. The other 2 are for missing DISAs unless you actually have the 3SIM

Is that message generated from invalid checksum hash or failure to lock an ECU?

Do LCI+ e90's have locked ECUs unlike pre-LCI?

I guess the bottom line is, has anyone with a 328i who flashed up to 330i and then back down to 328i (with or without 3 stage intake manifold) actually passed smog in CA?

So I asked earlier as I have a three stage intake I was going to rebuild. Now it's just sitting in the garage, making me sad. I need to put up for sale, but if anyone is interested LMK...

MHD customer here. How much time or how many miles did you let the engine run between flashing to stock and getting smogged? Thanks.

idk, I do it a week or two before it needs to be done to not have to worry about it.

Where are the mods to delete all the off topic bullshit in this thread?!?

For everyone who wants to understand the checksum, I wrote about it and have pictures from my car:
https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...5&postcount=25

The simple answer is that piggyback systems (like JB4) do not change the ECU's tuning, so they will not impact the checksum. These will likely fail a visual inspection (which can be ignored) and may throw engine codes and/or prevent emissions readiness monitors tests from completing.

ECU flash tuning will pass the visual inspection. However, any changes to the ECU's code will fail the plug-in inspection. This cannot be overlooked by the tech since the smog computer is reading the VIN and transmitting it to the CA DMV.

It's not about the miles, its about meeting the conditions for all the tests to occur. Check my link above, it has a (small) screenshot of how BMW describes the readiness monitor tests.

Hi. The only ‘engine’ mod I have is the MHD map. In addition to reverting to stock map (and obviously making sure the car is running clean), what else is needed to pass the smog test? Thanks.

Revert to the stock map and lock the ecu. This will give you the correct checksum. Then do the drive test from my link to reset the monitors. You can use a bluetooth OBDII adapter and an app to check them prior to going to smog. Assuming they all set, you pass smog.

A generic app may not tell you which monitors your car actually has. My link has the ones present on my car, which should be the same for yours.

15 Shipping tankers create more pollution in one year, than all cars on EARTH - Combined.

This has nothing to do with emissions and saving the environment, and everything to do with making vehicle ownership more expensive by pushing the consumer to electric cars.

No doubt. These legislators are freaking nuts. at this point all I can do is laugh. It's not like these residents are stuck there like the poor Cubans or North Koreans. I can't believe anyone would live in that state at this point.
Higher quality of life and a better economy in CA compared to most of the other states in the US is probably what makes it a popular state. Highest GDP and highest GDP per capita among the big states. CA 'per capita' GDP is almost 50% higher than Florida for instance.

So the Cuba and North Korea analogy does not work for CA. Economically it is the most successful state.
As a Californian I disagree. It's got to be one of the most oppressive states. They claim great prosperity, but keeps raising taxes at every turn. Either they're are liars or they are thieves. Taking my income taxes, and my X5, to Florida.

I had to smog for the first time a couple months ago. Dinan tuned X6M with K&N filters. Passed on first try and was out of the station in less than 20 minutes. Received sticker in less than a month.
