BMW Comments on Future of DTM Series After Mercedes Exit
BIMMERPOST NEWS BMW Comments on Future of DTM Participation After Mercedes Exit September 9, 2017 BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt on the future of the DTM: “After the announcement that Mercedes-Benz is going to leave the DTM at the end of 2018, we promised the fans that we would fight for the future of the DTM. We are working hard to do just that. We are involved in intensive discussions with ITR chairman Gerhard Berger and with manufacturers to develop a viable concept for the future, retain the DTM as an attractive and innovative platform and continue to provide fans with exciting motorsport in a top-level competitive environment. We support the introduction of the so-called Class One regulations and are prepared to equip DTM cars with extremely highly efficient and more powerful four-cylinder turbo engines and reduced aerodynamics. This would open the door for standardised, global regulations and allow the DTM to drive on the same technical foundation as the cars in the Japanese Super GT Championship, for example. This concept would secure the future of the DTM, open it up internationally, and make the whole platform more attractive. We would welcome it if other manufacturers followed and would also commit to the DTM.”

They should get Alfa Romeo to get back into DTM - just like in the golden years! Too bad Opel is almost bankrupt to play.

It was funny how ten years ago they gave up on F1 and Merc picked it up buying Brown GP at the most difficult time of F1 history.
Kubica, the super talent of BMW who was then fighting for championship, was even leading the score board in the 1st half of season when the team just decided to stop investing R&D for "preparing" for next year, when they actually quit... Well done BMW.

I wish DTM would go international. Why couldn't Ford, Chevy and some of the others mix in? It's not hard to slap aero and regulations on a Mustang or Camaro. These things on COTA, Laguna Seca and so on. I wanna see DTM in America.

Here's what I would propose:
- Do away with the silhouette racing and make the series production-based. - Do away with the V8 and go for that 2.0 turbo. - Open the door a little to allow FWD cars in order to attract more manufacturers. - Talk to other manufacturers and try to entice them to join. Talk to Peugeot, Renault, Ford, Jaguar, Alfa Romeo, Toyota/ Lexus, Nissan/ Infinity (it'll probably be either Nissan or Renault if they take the bait) and try to get them to join. - Yes, I know that there are other touring car series in which the other manufacturers might already compete in, but if you revise the regulations to be closer to the other touring car series but still keep DTM just different enough (think touring cars plus) to warrant entry for those manufacturers, it'd be an easier sell than what is currently the case. - Maybe think about basing the series a segment down, i.e. instead of basing it on the 3/ M4 and A4/ RS5, base it on the 1/ M2 and A3/ RS3 to allow for entries like the Megane, Fiesta, etc. Of course, this creates a problem for companies like Jaguar and Alfa Romeo though... On second thought, maybe keep the segment as is. How high are the costs involved with DTM racing at the moment anyway? I can't imagine it could be that high, surely. Did Mercedes pull out due to the costs being too high, or because they just have too much committed to its F1 program? Audi is no longer involved in LMP1, and BMW is only involved in GT racing at the moment as far as I know (plus Formula E next year). If the costs aren't too high for either Audi and BMW, then I have to assume that the F1 bill is preventing Merc from staying in DTM which, let's face it, does not attract that much attention outside of the more hardcore fanbase globally. If you can get more manufacturers to join and fashion the regs in such a way that it would feature close, paint-swapping racing regularly, it'll attract more eyeballs eventually. Bring back the "T" in DTM.
The decals are the only things left to make the cars look like their series counterparts. We are far from the glory days when cars based on actual M3s and 190E16V were competing against each other.

Besides, if the golden years of 90s BTCC is anything to go by, if the regulations are spot on, it can make for some extremely exciting racing regardless of whether the field has FWD, RWD or AWD entries. I have no idea if you've ever watched footage of that timeframe of BTCC, but if you haven't, I beg of you to go watch some youtube footage of it and report back. In my opinion, it was by far the best racing years of any racing category in recent memory. At the time, it was massively popular as it had what all racing fans truly want: very close racing, a wide variety of entrants and manufacturers, and crashes. Lots and lots of crashes. EDIT: A good place to start Last edited by kooper; 09-11-2017 at 02:30 PM.. |
