2001 530I oil issue?
I seem to be adding oil frequently. about 2 to 3 qts between oil changes....
It is my daily driver.. it's a manual. I've changed the vanos line, engine cover gasket, & oil filter housing.... I got an oil change a week ago today 5/6 and I had to add a qt of oil yesterday.... Any thoughts.....? |

I just asked my mechanic about this on my 2003 530i manual transmission. He said it is most likely the "CCV," or oil separator. He says it requires removal of the intake to get to it, and he would charge $500 to fix it. Common issue, unfortunately. Search online for "BMW CCV" and you'll see what I mean. Good luck.

No need to remove the intake manifold to replace the CCV and related hoses. I have done the M54 CCV many times, mostly on E46's which have less space than E39's, and never had to remove the IM.
You do need to remove the air box, MAF, intake boots, throttle body, idle control valve, and a few other peripherals. It helps tremendously to also remove the oil filter housing and air distribution manifold as you gain valuable space to access the CCV and connected hoses. It is not a difficult job, but does take several hours due to the number of parts that have to be removed. I usually do all these at the same time "while I'm in there" for the CCV. OFHG VANOS oil line CCV valve and 4 hoses All vacuum lines Air distribution manifold o-rings Dipstick o-rings Dipstick tube o-ring Upper and lower intake boots Clean ICV and TB DISA o-ring TB gasket |

Just did a CCV for a friend today. I took the intake off because I wanted to replace the gaskets at the same time. Taking the intake off makes it easier to replace all of the vacuum lines.
