I have a couple of questions in reference to which oil brand and weight? Also is this common for oil consumption in a short period?

Just recently bought my 03 530i auto with a little over 49k miles. I am now turning 52k miles on the dial and my check engine oil level light is coming on. Checked my dipstick and it is low. I added 1 quart of Castrol Edge fully synthetic 5w30. Should I use this oil or go to dealer to get oil?

I live in the Washington, DC area and is this weight good or should I try something else now that the weather is changing?

Is this normal for this car to run that low on oil, after only a couple thousand miles of driving? Do you think I should start fresh and just go get the oil changed?
