My 2000 e39 540i Sport had 284,000 miles when I let it go. It was the greatest car I have ever owned but spouse insisted on something newer. It took a v-8 M3 to even come close.
I would say don't let the mileage bother you, just plan (and budget) on replacing components as they wear out. Find a local BMW specialist to help stay out in front of failures.
