IMO the 2003 540i M-Sport is a great compromise between looks/performance/cost of ownership. No BMW is "cheap" to run but M5's can really attack the wallet.
To the OP, there is quite a bit of info floating around on these issues, Google is your friend. Start w/ searches like "E39 reliability" or "E39 M5 Problems" and I'm sure you'll find some good info.

No I think he meant that it's a better deal because the extra driving pleasure is worth the higher costs and I agree with him, the E39 M5 is one of the most amazing cars I've ever driven. I couldn't stop thinking about it for weeks after my first drive in one, the E60 M5 never left a similar impression on me.
